Why Go for Cowhide Rug?

These rugs are highly sought after because no product in this range is the same. Made of a 100% natural material, their colours, textures and sizes all differ, even when it’s the same design we’re talking about.

In other words, if standing out from the crowd is important for you, you can rest assured that by going for a natural floor covering you will always have something one-of-a-kind in your home or commercial space. Placing an authentic natural rug in any room would serve as a stunning feature that will have your visitors in awe and will always be a nice conversation starter.

Also, it should go without saying that these types of floor coverings are unmatched when it comes to comfort and warmth. The natural materials give the rugs a plush texture and a soft feel that makes them great for walking, standing and sitting alike. The Factors to Be Aware of When Shopping for Cowhides

When buying such a rug, keep in mind that generally the price is a good indication of the quality you’re going to get. All those cheaper options that you might find at many online rug stores and local shops are often what you would call boardy. Meaning that the material is slightly stiff (like a board), when in fact it should be soft and pliable. Remember: the hide or fur should have a nice soft and shiny coat and the leather should be glossy.

The shaping of the cowhide is another factor to consider. If it has a nice flowing shape and is fairly symmetrical with no long bits protruding out, then know that a lot of work has went into producing such a fine product.

Also, be sure there are no holes, cuts or visible repairs on top. If there are small repair patches underside and inconspicuous on the surface, it’s usually fine (remember, it’s a natural product), however we will always notify our customers prior to the shipment if any noticeable flaws are discovered.

Another thing to remember is if you do opt for a cheaper hide then you will have problems with the edges curling and they will not sit flat on the floor, these are what you call B grade hides. These B grade hides have underwent a poor-quality tanning process, they don't have enough oils and moisture left in them to keep them soft and flat.

Lastly, be aware of what actual size you are buying, some stores may be misleading by listing their goods as large in size when they are only a small to medium. So, to be on the safe side always ask for the square meter size if available and the exact length and width too.

Bearing that in mind, the AAA grade hides are really the only way to go. While they may cost a little more, at least your cow hide rug will lay flat on the floor and not look cheap and wrinkled up.

  1. How to Keep Your New Cowhide Rug Looking Its Best

Since AAA grade rugs can be quite expensive, it’s only natural that buyers would want to preserve their purchase for as long as possible. With proper maintenance combined with the sturdiness these materials offer, it’s possible to keep your rug looking great for years to come.

For everyday cleaning, it’s best to simply vacuum your rug. Now and then, it’s recommended to take it out and beat or shake it so the dust that’s settled deeper can be removed. After you’re done, let it air out in the shade.

Tip: Never leave screen-printed cowhides in the sun as they may fade (natural hide colours are exempted). Also, never leave your cowhide on the floor when moping around them or place it on a damp floor to prevent it from getting wet which may cause curling and warping.

Removing Stains from Cowhide Rugs

You can use warm water and soap to spot clean your cow skin hide, but at your own risk. Don’t soak or put it in a washing machine or use any type of cleaner or chemicals. For any liquid spills, use a dry cloth or paper towel to blot the area to soak up any excess fluids.

Then, you may lightly rub the stain using a PH neutral solution like white vinegar and water mixture. The use of eucalyptus oil or white spirits for any harsh spills like grease or gums is also recommended. After you’re done, hang out in the shade to dry.
